Let’s talk about: Fan Fictions!

Hi, my name is Ana and I like to read fan fictions! Last week, I was talking with one of my co-workers about the ending of a well-known TV series and when I mentioned the word fan fiction, she was so confused!

She didn’t know what was fan fiction and I had to explain to her what it was and where she could find some great stories. She was not convinced. I explained that sometimes when I don’t like the ending of a series, or when I’m not ready to say goodbye, fan fiction is one of the best things that were created on the internet!

I left the conversation with the idea that she thinks fan fiction is about smut stories and that’s a silly thing. I can’t condone her because she don’t know what fan fiction really is and I think that there’s a pre conceived idea that it’s not good as a book or the actual series.

Am I the only one that loves fan fiction? I think not.

There are three TV series that sometimes I like to search, and I can blame the endings, because all the series ended and none gave me what I wanted. I only read fan fiction in two websites, and archive of our own.

Fanfiction is perfect to follow a story because, if you click on follow, you’ll receive an e-mail every time that there’s a new chapter. It’s very easy to find stories and some have a quality that’s amazing! You can filter stories by choosing the characters, genre, rating and status (story completed or not). You can also choose stories with characters that don’t enter in them.

Attention: don’t forget to filter the story by rating. I normally choose “All” because the author can change the rating at any moment, and you can loose the trace of the story (if you are not following it by e-mail).

I think Archive of our Own is easier when we want to stories with a specific couple. You just have to insert on google archive of our own and the two names of the characters that you want in the story. You also can filter the stories, by data updated (more recent stories will come in the top), ratings, categories, and even search by tag (perfect if you are looking for something specific, for example time traveling).

I was always a fan of Oliver Queen/Felicity Smoak story on the tv show, but I have to say that I found some gems in fan fictions. When it comes to this couple, in my opinion Archive of our Own has more stories, and like I said it’s really simple to search for it: Google ‘archive of our own Felicity Smoak/Oliver Queen’ and bam! Some of my favorites are:

  • Queen of hearts
  • Forever is composed of Nows
  • His Girl Wednesday
  • The Crow

There’s a lot more….this is a fandom very active because there are new updates everyday.

Vampire Diaries

There’s two couples that I wanted to see on the tv show but unfortunately, Julie Plec never choose that path – Bonnie Bennet/Damon Salvatore and Caroline Forbes/Klaus Mikaelson. For this show I prefer website. Some of my favorite are:

  • Blue Bayou
  • Adverse effect
  • Dear Elena
  • Effervescente
  • Timeless
  • Destiny

The 100

I hated the ending, and I have to say that I searched for fan fiction with different endings but found myself lost in different worlds of Bellamy Blake/Clarke Griffin! I always search for fan fiction of this couple on Archive of our own and I have to say that this fandom is still very active when it comes to fan fiction, because every day there are tones of new stories. Some of my favorites are:

  • Love will come through
  • Slow it down
  • I’m not asking too much of you
  • And I love this place, the enormous sky

What about you? Do you read fan fiction? What are your favorite stories? Let me know in the comments.

Note: my co-worker is still not convinced!

  1. Oh, I don’t read fanfiction but I can see how it could be very fun! There are definitely a few stories that I’d like to read more of but I don’t really want to get engrossed in a story that isn’t real (The stories I’m thinking of haven’t actually finished, I’m just waiting for sequels/next seasons to come out) and I also don’t like reading on the computer.
I was pleasantly surprised to see your mention of the Arrow on here…I haven’t watched the arrow but I am currently watching The Flash and Oliver and Felicity both do make a few appearances in there.
    Great post!

  2. What can I say, I love fan fiction haha. I only really read in archive (I tried watt pad once but there was too much stuff to get my head around 😂) and I’ve never tried couples from tv shows but I’ll have to check it out! I’m normally found on book ships, I really like how they take bits of canon and just totally change other bits. I’ve also seen so much stuff at the moment where people have paid to have fan fictions bound into real books, which looks SO COOL and i have to admit that having an actual book would be a lot better than squinting into my phone screen at 2am. But I think they’re very expensive and maybe not worth it. What do you think?

    1. Hi! First thank you so much for reading my post! I love fan fiction too! I never tried Watt pad (I think it’s a difficult platform). I advice you to try, it’s really good (as good as archive)! I really think that writing fan fiction before a real book is a way to get to know what really is our cup of tea when it comes to writing. It’s really cool to have a real book published after the experience of writing fan fiction, but I totally agree with you on the fact that those type of books are really expensive. Well, in reality I’ve been noticing that books are getting more expensive….at least in my country we pay a lot for a book!
