A Deal with the Elf King by Elise Kova [Review]

Hey readers,

My summer vacations are right there, and I think that unconsciously, it made me feel more energetic and so I’ve been able to read more! I’m really happy about it 😉 The proof is that I read this book in three days!

A Deal with the Elf King by Elise Kova is the first book in the series Married to Magic and the author makes clear in the end fo the book that Married to Magic is not a series, but a world. I think what she wants to say is that each novel is set in the same universe but it has different heroines who encounters magic, romance and (like the name says) marriage before reaching her ultimate happy ending. That also means that each book can be read as a standalone.

A Deal with the Elf King tells the story of Luella. A nineteen-year-old girl that dedicated her life studying herbology, becoming the town’s healer. The book starts by showing her childhood crush/friend, Lucas, asking her to run away with him. She ‘loves’ him but doesn’t want to go because she has a job in the village and is needed there.

Right away we can see that he knows something…

Three-thousand years ago, humans were hunted by powerful races with wild magic until a agreement was made. Since then, for centuries, the elves take a young woman from her village to be their Human Queen.

But it can’t be any normal girl, she has to have powers/magic. And the whole village is worried because there hasn’t been a girl who show the capacity of magic for some time, and the elves are coming…

Luella thinks she’s a normal girl, so she doesn’t need to fear to be taken from her world, right? Of course not, because as soon as the Elf King unexpectedly arrives, we find out that she’s not so normal and that all the potions that she thought she made because of her studies were also powered by her magic, because …tum tum tum …. she’s the next Human Queen.

She’s taken from her village and forced to marry the cold but handsome Elf King in minutes. Once she arrives to his land, she discovers that world is dying and she’s the only that can save it.

The problem? While she give life to that world, she also looses the life in her body. And as a Human Queen, she needs to stay there until her energy ends.

So she makes a pact with her husband – if she can find a way to save his world without her needing to be there, he’ll help her get back to her village. Luella and Eldas are different but they both as a sense of duty, him with his world and she as the the only healer of the village.

Of course, the path of duty and love starts to get blurred because she starts to fall in love with her husband. And vice-versa.

In the end, she must make a choice. And it’s a happy ending, so you can connect the dots, right?

I liked this book, the story is simple to understand, some parts are predictable but cute. It’s a fantasy book, but as the story goes I found that something was missing. After all, this was supposed to be an Elf’s world.. It lacked costumes details, and more characters details. More fantasy, more magic…glitter and stars all over the place. That’s what I expect from these type of worlds.

The Elf King, Eldas, is portrayed as handsome, something I was expecting, they always are. I was expecting a different king – more wicked, mischievous – something like Cardan (from Holly Black world). Eldas was very human.

The ending was very simple, but I liked it.

I can’t end this review without saying that I really liked the character Harrow, the youngest brother of the king. I would like to read a book about him, there is a lot more about his story ..unlike his brother, he has some traits that I would expect from a MC of a fantasy world.

Overall this is a book that I advice you to read, I think that because this is still the first book, the author is still building a new world and it’s normal that some parts are not perfect. It’s very entertaining and although it’s simple, I found myself wanting to read more and more. Ohh and thumbs up for the cover!

The next Married to Magic novel is named ‘A dance with the Fae Rogue’ and although we don’t know much about it, here is a little synopsis:

‘The next stand alone fantasy romance in the Married to Magic world centers on a young woman taken captive by a disarmingly handsome face rogue after she witness a ritual not meant for human eyes in the dead of night’.

I read that a proper synopsis and the cover of the new book will be released in July! Finger crossed because the little I read made me very curious.
