You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle [Review]

After a few friends recommended the book ‘You Deserve each other’ to me, I decided it was time to read it. This is a lovers-to-enemies-to-lover-again but with a lot of comedy! The romance and comedy is very well balanced.

I laughed a lot reading this rom-com but I also have to say that in the middle of all comedy there are serious issues that were talked lightly but with the deserved respect: the lack of confidence and communication between a couple.

I ended this book wanting more and that’s a big sign to know that I really liked this book!

‘Naomi Westfield has the perfect fiancé: Nicholas Rose holds doors open for her, remembers her restaurant orders, and comes from the kind of upstanding society family any bride would love to be a part of. They never fight. They’re preparing for their lavish wedding that’s three months away. And she is miserably and utterly sick of him.

Naomi wants out, but there’s a catch: whoever ends the engagement will have to foot the nonrefundable wedding bill. When Naomi discovers that Nicholas, too, has been feigning contentment, the two of them go head-to-head in a battle of pranks, sabotage, and all-out emotional warfare.

But with the countdown looming to the wedding that may or may not come to pass, Naomi finds her resolve slipping. Because now that they have nothing to lose, they’re finally being themselves–and having fun with the last person they expect: each other’.

The book starts with the beginning of Naomi and Nicholas relationship and how everything is beautiful and wonderful. Two years later, they are engaged, but half of the time Naomi doesn’t even know if she wants to be with Nicholas anymore. Her mother-in-law is a nightmare and her fiancé doesn’t care about what she thinks. Well, at least it is what she thinks.

Nicholas is a mommy’s boy, he does everything to please her, gives her flowers (although he never gave one flower to Naomi) and always put his mother in the first place.

Nicholas is also unhappy. But the wedding is so far along that non of them want to call it quits. If she quits, Nicholas will be the poor guy that was dumped and she will have to pay her part of the wedding. Eventually, they get in this war of sorts.

“Let’s go!” he calls up after a few minutes. “We have to go get your car! What the fuck do you want for dinner?” “I fucking want pizza!” I holler. I’ve wanted some since the son of a bitch got it delivered. “Fine! I’ve got a fucking coupon for Benigno’s anyway!” “Great! I fucking love Benigno’s!”

In the middle of pranks and bets, Naomi and Nicholas find each other, the real Naomi and Nicholas and they fall in love ‘again’.

I loved to see in a book how a romance can die, and how a person can not be in love although in my opinion they always loved each other but had a big lack of communication.

My favorite part is when Naomi starts to be assertive and says everything to Nicholas, like a crazy and he explodes saying everything that he was thinking too.

Naomi is a great heroine, smart, funny but also with a lot of confidence problems, and that’s understandable because of her family dynamic and her job searching response.

I was half of the book hating Nicholas but then he grew on me and I started to liking him (a lot) and I even felt sorry for him, because he didn’t know how to say no to his mother. In the second half of the book, he did shine, becoming the hero that we deserved. He never gave up of Naomi, and in a part of the book we understand the reasons of some of his actions. In the end, he always loved her and just wanted her to have his back. Again, lack of communication!

“Go ahead and wear pajamas to dinner, Naomi. You think that would bother me? You can go out dressed as Santa Claus and I wound’t care.” Now I genuinely am insulted. “Why wouldn’t you care?” He raises his eyes to mine. “Because I think you’re beautiful no matter what.”

I really like this book and to know in the end how they met each other – it was really the destiny!

If you want a light rom-com with lots of comedy but also some emotion, then this is the book for you! It’s a 4,5 starts for me!
